For the first Friday of every month since last March, Bandcamp has given artists on their platform 100% of the profits made from purchases on their site. With endless amounts of artists and projects to sift through, I find it difficult to choose a few to purchase. So, for this week’s Bandcamp Friday here are my 4 picks. All are abstract beat tapes from artists based in New York or influenced heavily by New York. Here’s a few tapes I love as a great starting point for this month’s Bandcamp Friday.
Ade Hakim – From Time Before – From Time Before comes via Bronx based producer Ade Hakim. Ade pioneered the warped-style abstract hip-hop sound most associated with the group sLums. Sample-heavy and psychedelic, From Time Before includes some of Ade’s finest instrumentals and showcases his dynamic abilities as a producer.
pis.i – Mr. Human Was Too Curious – Italy based producer pis.i’s “Mr. Human Was Too Curious” is an abstract experience. His glitchy talent is unmatched and creates a unique atmosphere that makes a special listening experience front to back. Filled with layered textures and captivating drum sequencing, this project is one that you won’t want to miss.
dj n00n – Days In the West – “Days in the West” is the latest beat tape from Long Island based producer DJ n00n. At just under 37 minutes, the tape contains finely refined loops that’ll have you bobbing your head, stank face and all. The short songs on this project make it easy listening, no one song overstaying its welcome. N00n has mastered the craft of the loop, creating pockets one can easily get stuck in their head. I’m looking forward to what n00n has up his sleeve for the next tape.
dj blackpower – for ur own good – dj blackpower aka MIKE has released yet another solid-as-concrete tape. Expanding his typical abstract hip-hop sound into one that is more house and dance influenced suits this tape well. The variance in instrumentation and style of production is enough to have me patiently waiting for whatever dj blackpower does next.
