ATTEN-TION!
Drill music is extremely popular across the world right now, with a huge scene in the UK, and gaining a lot of momentum in New York. On my recent trip to NYC, the artists and NY-natives I connected with claimed that the Drill scene is biggest in Brooklyn– but what some may or may not know is that its origins derive from elsewhere. The word Drill was coined in the 2010s by Chicago Native Pac Man–may he rest in peace. Chicago titans like Chief Keef, and King Louie, partially inspired off of ATL artist Waka Flocka Flame, were some of the firsts to implement the rich, heavy, hyperactive ensemble of sounds like gunshots and horns we hear today when listening to the genre. I had to make this playlist because I love Drill music. I grew up with the subgenre, and I ALWAYS had some tracks in my warm-up playlists like Chief Keefs’ Love Sosa and Waka Flockas’ Hard in Da Paint. And now I bring you a list of old-school to modern Drill inspired off my NYC trip. Over and out!
