ADP.FM and the City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program are proud to present:
Season 2 of Surround Sound
In 2021, we asked four DJs to pick a specific neighborhood in Oakland that they have a history and connection to, and to explore what that neighborhood means to them in the form of a special one-hour mix and interview. The streaming visuals and backgrounds were all created by YR Media participants.
We heard some compelling and exclusive stories and music from DJ D Sharp, DJ Zita, DJ Lady Ryan, and DJ Fuze. If you missed it last year, check out the full archive of each episode here.
This year, we have four more DJs and four more neighborhoods in Oakland for you going live for four Thursdays in a row at 2 p.m., with a rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
Starting things off on May 19, we have EDEL. He dedicated his mix to Downtown Oakland and Chinatown. Tune in as he talks about the birth of the Steady Crew, their series of parties and plays a mix focused on the anthems that got the whole movement going.
On May 26 we have whatsupalbert. Albert’s mix is focused on Downtown Oakland and West Oakland, and the period of time in the 00s and 2010s where Trill Team 6, Sick Sad Oakland and others put together showcases and parties in living rooms, warehouses, etc. featuring Main Attrakionz, Friendzone, DJ Earl and many others.
For June 2, we have Chungtech and Smokestack giving us their take on North Oakland, and playing an all-vinyl back-to-back set featuring everything from City Pop and Boogie to 45s from now-defunct North Oakland labels.
Closing out Season 2 on June 9, Red Corvette gives us a mix dedicated to her time in Old Oakland. We get to hear about her growing as a DJ, her many mentors at all the venues in the neighborhood, and an eclectic mix full of Soundcloud’s finest edits, Amapiano cuts and more.
All mixes will be streaming live on the ADP.FM front page every Thursday at 2 p.m.PT, with a rebroadcast at 7 p.m PT, starting May 19
This project is supported by the Oakland City Council and funded by the City of Oakland’s Cultural Funding Program.
