In the late 80s and 90s, the West Coast dynasty ruled the rap game. Rappers like 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eazy E, DJ Quik and many more dominated the rap charts with their West Coast swag. Since then, the Atlanta hip hop scene has taken over with trap music holding the game by its neck for the past decade or two. As we head toward the tail end of the Atlanta rap dynasty, will the West reclaim dominance? Many of these new rappers are coming up under some of the best in the game like Kendrick Lamar, YG, and the late and great Nipsey Hussle. Villain Park
Villain Park is a rap Trio made up of rappers Smoke and Bunge and DJ/Producer Coly Cole. This independent rap group has a very refreshing presence in the scene. They keep the L.A. style with classic West Coast beats, but they still put a strong emphasis on creative lyrics. Both Smoke and Bunge are great lyricists, which is very refreshing for young rappers nowadays. Huey Briss
Huey Briss is an up and coming Long Beach rapper that brings a unique style to the rap game. His laid back, effortless rap style compliments his clever wordplay and engaging flow. Huey dropped his first album in 2018 called Black Wax, and its opening track is called ‘Gil Scott Never Lied.’ This track has an excellent low energy boom-bap beat where he flaunts his West Coast swag paired brilliant wordplay. G Perico
L.A. native G Perico is a young rapper with much promise and potential. His exciting style is often compared to legendary emcees like Eazy-E and DJ Quik. G Perico brings the listener back to that West Coast golden age with his refreshing take on gangster rap. G Perico has been critically acclaimed by FADER, XXL Mag, Pitchfork, and the New York Times. Joey Fatts
Long Beach native Joey Fatts is showing crazy potential and might rock the game with his unique energy and style. Joey has been releasing mixtapes since 2012 and working on perfecting his sound. His last mixtape “Olive Boy” featured fellow Long Beach native Vince Staples who has appeared on many Joey’s albums. Patrick Paige II
Patrick Paige II is the bassist in the famous L.A. band The Internet. Patrick dropped a solo album ‘Letters of Irrelevance,’ where he shows off his bass, songwriting, rapping, and singing skills. His instrumentals are very intricate and sonically pleasing; Patrick has an excellent way of relaxing the listener with these sounds. His rapping and singing are excellent as well.
