London via Germany EDM producer Tai recently released a new EP titled “Indian Kill” on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak imprint. It crossed my radar this morning via Ottowa, Ontario producer DJ NDN’s Facebook page where he wrote:
“I can’t believe this is ok. This is the cover for TAI’s new album “Indian Kill”. He’s a German producer signed to Dim Mak owned by Steve Aoki. This makes me sick on how violent racism like this is acceptable in EDM. I’m so upset right now.”
DJ NDN of A Tribe Called Red makes their own brand of kick ass electronic dance music, and coexists in a context in which Aoki and his label are held in high regard, so I can see how he’d be particularly upset. I quickly reposted the article like many other Natives on FB, but then I wondered what Steve Aoki thought, as a man of color…
If Power + Privilege = Racism, it’s unlikely that the Benihana heir, turned celebrity, turned dj, turned record label “Chief” would get it, and its perfectly clear that Aoki doesn’t.
He needs our help. Email him at SteveAoki.com and demand he remove the release, change the name, nix the tune (the song sucks and has an annoying vocal sample that “whoops”) and burn his fucking head-dress. it looks something like this:
Give ‘em hell, internet.
