ADP.FM and the City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program are proud to present:
Surround Sound : Oakland
We asked four DJs to pick a specific neighborhood in Oakland that they have a history and connection to, and to explore what that neighborhood means to them in the form of a special 1-hour mix and interview. The streaming visuals and backgrounds were all created by YR Media participants.
Starting things off on July 7th at 6PM, for Episode 1, we have DJ D Sharp talking about the Twomps (Dubs), and specifically the Manzanita Rec Center where he threw his first parties as a teenager (see full archive HERE ).
Episode 2 features DJ Zita exploring her relationship with the Oakland Redwoods as a crucial part of a balanced life living in East Oakland.
For Episode 3, DJ LadyRyan takes us back to Lake Merritt circa 2009, and talks about the emergence of new type of venue and DJ scene in Oakland during that era.
Episode 4 features DJ Fuze. Having trouble picking just one neighborhood, Fuze chose to take us on a journey from the first place he lived in East Oakland (Funktown) when his family came to California in his childhood, to Gaskill and other parts of North Oakland where he was living while DJing and producing music for Digital Underground, 2Pac, Raw Fusion, The Luniz, Dru Down, and others.
Starting the 7th, the mixes will be streaming live every Wednesday in July at 6PM.
This project is supported by the Oakland City Council and funded by the City of Oakland’s Cultural Funding Program
