This episode of WORLD OVER highlights music made for moving during this Carnival Season! We
start off with a festive tune from a country off the coast of West Africa called Equatorial Guinea,
which is the only sovereign African state in which Spanish is an official language. I then move to
the Caribbean for back to back Soca heaters and then on to Brazil’s Baile Funk/Funk Carioca
sounds. As we celebrate I think it’s important to remember that Carnival has a complicated
origin, tied to colonialism, religious conversion and ultimately freedom and celebration.
